Cummins inc was founded in 1919 and is headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, USA. It has approximately 61,615 employees worldwide, more than 600 distribution agencies and more than 8,000 dealers worldwide, providing products to customers in more than 190 countries and regions.
Cummins in China history
Cummins and its affiliated subsidiaries have invested more than US$1 billion in China. As a foreign investor in China’s diesel engine industry, Cummins’ business ties with China began in 1975, when Mr. Erwin Miller, then chairman of Cummins, visited Beijing for the first time and became one of the earliest American entrepreneurs to seek business cooperation in China. In 1979, when China and the United States established diplomatic relations and China began to open up to the outside world, the first Cummins office in China was established in Beijing.
Cummins has been localizing engine production in China for a long time
- In 1981, Chongqing Engine Factory began to produce Cummins engines under license.
- In 1995, Cummins’ first joint venture engine factory in China was established.
- In 1997, Cummins officially established its regional headquarters in China, and Cummins (China) Investment Co., Ltd. was established in Beijing to coordinate Cummins’ investment and business development in East Asia.
So far, Cummins has a total of 30 institutions in China, including 16 joint ventures, with more than 10,000 employees, producing engines, generator sets. Cummins’ service network in China includes 19 regional service centers and more than 2,000 authorized dealers of wholly-owned and joint venture enterprises in China
Cummins is also one of the earliest foreign-funded diesel engine companies to set up a research and development center in China. In August 2006, the engine established by Cummins and Dongfeng Motor was officially opened in Wuhan, Hubei.
In 2019, Cummins continued to perform well in China, with overall sales revenue, including joint ventures, reaching US$5.6 billion, a record high. The overall engine sales, including generator sets and export markets, reached nearly 540,000 units, also creating a historical best.
After more than 40 years of development, China has become one of Cummins’ largest and fastest-growing overseas markets in the world.
